Which flooring is better? Vitrified tiles, Granite, or Italian Marble

It is a difficult decision to decide which flooring option you need to opt. In this, article we are giving advantages and disadvantages of each flooring option. We have provided few of the points for each flooring type. Hope this may give some clarity in deciding the flooring. Please let other readers know, how you concluded/arrived at flooring decision.

Granite:

  • Hard rock material, tough and more resistant to absorbs
  • You will be amazed after seeing the patterns and colors of nature
  • Can be used directly after purchasing from the shop
  • Cost will be more compared to vitrified tiles and Granite
  • Easy for maintenance when compared to other two options
  • Very few chances are there to break and for scratches
  • More durable for acid wash and rough usage
  • In a case if you have sufficient budget, you can look for antiskid granite also. which is good for old age people. You may not get this in marble because of the

Marble:

  • Soft rock
  • You need to lay the Marbles then polishing process will start. Initial laying process is more than granite and tiles
  • Advantage is if you feel flooring lost it’s shining then you can do polishing one more time so that you will get the first look. This will be one advantage in case if you are going for a marble
  • Generally cost wise it will be little lesser than granite but laying cost may vary.
  • very fewer chances are there to break and for scratches but because of the soft nature, when compared to granite it is prone to scratches.
  • If patterns are available in Marble, Marble Layer can create very nice patterns out of it

Vitrified Tiles:

  • Man made material
  • Easily available in shops in all the areas and ready to install
  • Same model/color/variety may not be available in the future for maintenance purpose
  • easy to handle while laying process
  • More joints will come. you will not get big dimensions like granite and marble
  • While purchasing, if needed you can get huge quantities of same pattern/color

Environmental factors:

Climate will not be a main consideration if you prefer any one of the floor type but keep this in mind that this also plays an important role

  • Marble will give you coldness. if you are in Hyderabad then it will be better to opt for a marble because temperatures are high in Hyderabad when compared to Bangalore
  • If you are in Bangalore then you can opt for Granite because of cold weather nature.

Conclusion:

It is purely on the personal choice, but you can conclude your decision based on following factors. List down your priorities based on below points and give percentage/marks to each point. Then you should be able to come to a conclusion.

  1. Maintenance standpoint with respect to cleaning
  2. Usage patterns like rough usage
  3. Family needs
  4. Affordability
  5. Your availability in the future in case of partial replacements
  6. Your available time during construction to get the material
  7. Environmental factors as explained above

    Team ,

    Which one is cheap???
    Italian Marble or Granite ?????

    Please let me know .

    • opti August 24, 2018, 11:46 AM

In South India granite works out to be cheaper but in North India marble works cheaper.

Marble mines are in Rajasthan , MP and Gujrat ,So Indian marble is also not too costly in south however transportation charges and local shops margins add up.
In Bangalore labour rate of Installation and polishing is high ( approx. 70 to 120Rs) as the polishing skills is not with local artisans and contractors who bring labourers from Rajasthan and MP charge a premium.
whereas Granite is a hard stone so comes pre-polished.

In North India Indian marbles are cheap and also labour and polishing is cheap ( 30 to 40 Rs per sqft) where as granite being a very hard stone factories need to install big polishers.

Indian marble no doubt , It is hard non-porous and without pin hole and cracks. This is the reason Indian marble is available in Raw form ( free of epoxy resin) where as Italian marble is always sold as polished and epoxy filled. Huge blocks of marbles are imported from Italy , Moracco , Egypt etc and then cut in gang saw filled with epoxy and polished before being displayed in shops. This is not some sort of charity Italian marble dealers are doing they have to do to hide defects of the stone.
After installation again you will have to go for diamond head polishing which is done in 7 steps.
Remember Italian marble business has lot of money behind it so there is lot of false advertising and claims.
Traditionally Indian marble was polished using magnesium stone in 3 steps and just wax polishing was done. But If you apply same 7 step diamond polishing on Indian marble and seal with crystallizer you will get same glossy mirror finish as Italian at much cheaper price and better quality.

    • harsha January 11, 2018, 6:15 PM

mainly it depends on price if u don’t have thought on it you can choose marble rather that WOODEN FLOOR is the est option up on all the floors here they have mentioned about wood their are so many many advantages and its uses. Choosing tiles have disadvantages where as in marbles also but if u want healthy, good looking, royalty, and yeah long life better choose wood

What is d difference in weight per sft after finished floor laying:
    1) For Vetrified tile of 9.5 mm thickness – each tile dimension 2′ x 2′)
    2) For Granite of 19 mm thickness.

In a multi story apartment, where overall dead-weight of d building is critical because of loose soil conditions (with soil can load of only 70 kgs / sq.mtr), which is a better option: Vetrified tile flooring or Granite flooring in tetms of overall weight per sft (after floor finishing)?
